Day 89 – March 30

Thank goodness National Walk in The Park Day fell on the one sunny day Vancouver has ever had in the history of it’s existence

Duncan hasn’t been out for a good burn in a while due to abominable weather. He is a true wuss.

Kathleen & I chose to take Duncan, and ourselves, to the nearest park which was Kitsilano Beach Park, a park, by the beach, in Kitsilano- a demonstration of pure ingenuity by the people of Vancouver with that name, for sure.


Duncan lead the way through sand, trees, shrubs and bridges.

We were all pretty spent when we got home, so much so that I nearly forgot it was National Pencil Day

I had thought I would dazzle my Instagram following with an amazing feat of artistic talent using my full scale pencil set. I was gonna shade and smudge and really show everyone out there what I’m made of… but couldn’t think of what to draw.

While racking my brain, I recalled the drawing contests published in Archie comics from my childhood and tried to look up what the scholarships they boasted handing out were actually for. I couldn’t find much on it

I did, at least, find the image I was looking for and was able to recreate it

Hopefully the artist scouts will be in touch shortly with my cash money


Day 88- March 29

The 88th day of my celebratory journey was yet another rainy one.

Like fucking downpour. Like I had to turn back to get an umbrella and still was soaked when I got to school kinda rain.

So over it.

It was National Lemon Chiffon Day, which was quite the mission.

I searched high and low. I went all through Granville Island Farmers Market, I popped into the vegan gluten free bakery by my gym, and tried Whole Foods. There were no Lemon Chiffon cakes to be had, or any lemon anything, really.

I refused to make a whole cake on this day because
a) I don’t even like lemon cakes
b) I still have god damn chocolate covered raisin oatmeal cookies left from last baking episode
c) time was of the essence

So I bought a small piece of junky cheapy vanilla cake from Safeway that had putrid lemon frosting splurged on top of it and cheated.

I sliced up a real lemon to try and make amends with myself for failing on this plight.

It was a really shitty cake. The icing was definitely made of lard and the stuff that could turn a few unassuming little pet shop turtles into Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, & Raphael.


And I ‘hate ate’ it too.


Day 87 – March 28


When I saw that it was National Something on a Stick Day, I immediately thought of my niece and nephews favourite treat:

Cake Pops!

Boy do the kids love these.
And would you believe, despite the few thousand that I have bought in my lifetime, I have never had one myself?

Today was the day, my friends.
It was pouring rain in Vancouver… so bad that Duncan refused to go of the step to do his pee. After running a few school related errands and becoming soaked to the bone, I scurried into the cupcakery called Cupcakes on Broadway. There they awaited – my first cake pop. I picked one up for Christina too.

Once I had ‘done my thang’ photography wise, it was time to actually taste one.
It wasn’t quite the quality of a fine chocolate or piece of fudge, but it wasn’t cake whatsoever. Just a ball of fudgey chocolatey sugar.

I managed to handle my sugar high, pretty well  I think, and was able to carry forward with a productive day.

National Something on a Stick Day presented the opportunity for another ‘first’, which I always embrace, but it was, without a doubt, another ‘last’ as well.



Day 86 – March 27

This was quite the strange holiday, I have to admit.

It was National Joe Day– a day to celebrate all the Joes you may know.

I know one or two but they aren’t around.

I had my first class back after having ‘spring break’ in the morning and Christina had arranged a spa day for all of us, including my mom, for the afternoon. En route to the spa, I took note of a restaurant called JOEY’S.

Apparently it is a chain that was founded in Vancouver.

We decided to pop in there for a bottle of wine post spa to celebrate Joe Day and hoist a glass to Joe’s everywhere.

It was pretty nice in there but we thought we should up the celebratory ante by taking a photo with the sign, posing with a compact mirror featuring Joey Smallwood, the last father of confederation

I think it went remarkably well.

Here’s to you, Joes.


Day 85- March 26

March 26 is National Spinach Day

Allow me to share a pictograph I found through a basic Google search that I will take as gospel… or fact, rather.

There you go. Eat spinach.

I drank mine to celebrate the day, in the form of Popeye Mylk by K & I Juice Co

It was a concoction involving spinach, apple, parsley, hemp & cinnamon. I saw it at Whole Foods, thought it was different …and a bit of a gamble.

But it paid off – I found this beverage to be absolutely delightful and I would have it again tomorrow… if it wasn’t $9, that is.

Day 84 – March 25th

Waffle Day

My mother arrived the night before

Christina and I had arranged for all of us to go to Float House for a float in a sensory deprivation tank, followed by brunch at Chambar for their mini waffles.

Float House’s sales pitch is “Experience Nothing”

Being basic af, I was sold instantly.

We were each given a private room with a float tank and shower. The showers are stocked with specialty cleansers to ensure no humanity remains on your person before entering the tank.

The guy who showed us around had offered us a selection of music to play for the first twenty minutes in the tank. I had eagerly showered and hopped in the tank. I lay there for quite some time before the music started. I guess I scored some free additional nothing time. Awesome.

The water was slimy but the ear plugs worked. This was one of my biggest concerns (getting water in my ears), second only to not being able to open the tank door from the inside.
It’s funny how I open doors all day long, being an able bodied person – my bedroom door, my bathroom door, my apartment building door, coffee shop doors, the jeep door, doors of buildings, all shapes and sizes, in countries foreign and non. Yet the moment I am to open a door while naked, I assume this skill will dissipate.

The door was quite easy to lift.

Ninety (+)  minutes was a long time, but it didn’t feel like forever. I think I am so used to be being bored that it was a walk in the park… or rather, a float in the tank 😉

Chrissy and I lasted the full time, but my mom bailed part way through.

Then we went for waffles

We had milk chocolate lavender gold dipping sauce as well as white chocolate pistachio and salted caramel. Just like the Kardashians, no doubt.

They were delicious and I wish I had a plate of them right. now.

Oh and it was also National Tolkien Reading Day, so Duncan and I started The Hobbit before bed

He thought it was boring and there weren’t enough dogs

I don’t think there are any strong female leads… or female characters at all


Day 83 – March 24

March 24 is National Chocolate Covered Raisin Day!

Chocolate covered raisins aren’t all bad. I do, however, have some mixed emotions about raisins.
While raisins aren’t the worst worst, they are pretty close to the worst. Especially when they are in something and  you think they are chocolate chips but they are not.
They are raisin.
That’s the worst.

I thought about this dilemma and  came up with a concept to counteract this common problem : Oatmeal Chocolate Covered Raisin cookies

It’s exactly like having an oatmeal raisin cookie,  just with chocolate too.
Cuts down on the trauma… slightly.

To make these puppies you will need all these things:

  • 1 1/4 cups of flour
  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • dash of salt
  • 1 cup of butter
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 cups quick oats
  • 1 package of chocolate covered raisins, like Glossetts

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Thoroughly combine the first 5 ingredients in a bowl.
In a second bowl mix the next 5 ingredients with a mixer. Then combine the two bowls together.

When it looks like there’s a pretty good scene going on, incorporate the oats and then the chocolate covered raisin.

It’s always a great idea to chill cookie dough before baking, so do so if you have the time. If not- just scoop heaping tablespoons worth into cookie sheet.

Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.

Wham bam, thank you ma…chocolate covered raisins!

Day 82- March 23

National Chia Day!

Chia seeds are fantastic 

They have potassium, Omega-3’s, fibre, calcium & all kinds of free-radical fighting antioxidants. You can even grow your own pet out of them.

I have a whole ginormous Costco sized bag of them in my cupboard and throw them in muffins, homemade granola bars, oatmeal, salads & smoothies.

So in honour of this revolutionary seed, I made a
Blueberry Oatmeal Cashew Milk smoothie
(hope the title didn’t give too much away)

  • 1 cup DIY cashew milk
  • 3/4 cup frozen blueberries
  • 1/3 cup oatmeal
  • 1 tablespoon of chia seeds
  • 1 tablespoon of honey

Combine in blender & Voila! A purple-blueish smoothie packed with nutritional benefits.

Day 81 – March 22

National Goof Off Day/ International Goof Off Day

According to National Day,  This is “a day to relax, enjoy and goof off.  Do something fun and leave the work until tomorrow.  Everybody needs to take a break from time to time.  It is often so easy to get so involved in the work and pressures in our lives. So stop, take a break, find something that you enjoy doing and do it!”

So with that, I decided to Goof Off from celebrating… which works out to still be celebrating the day… so it’s win win.


Day 80 – March 21st

Had a lovely visit with Kathleen last night ( she helped polish off the remaining ravioli of National Ravioli Day ). While chatting, she explained to me that although March 20th is often referred to as the first day of spring, it’s actually meant to be considered the last day of darkness… and then the 21st is the first day of light. That was a much nicer way to perceive the day considering I spent it coping the best I could with an all consuming panic attack.

So today, National Fragrance Day & International Day of Forests, I was looking forward to leaving all the gunk of  yesterday behind me and shedding the dreariness and sorrow the winter had brought.

I had smelled this perfume @ anthropologie back in February at some time and thought it was lovely. I never wear perfumes, I’m mildly allergic and some people can be severely allergic, plus I’m lazy af and couldn’t be arsed.

But, being a new day new me new season kinda thing and seeing as how I wasn’t crippled with an anxiety attack,  I decided to head all the way to the anthropologie on South Granville with Duncan and treat myself.

(It smells like vanilla)
