Day 151 – May 31st

National Macaroon Day

Feels like I haven’t baked or cooked anything in a while for this project so although Whole Foods is not even a block away and you can get a pack of vegan, gluten free macaroons there for like $6, I went the old fashioned route and decided to make them myself, as I have never made them before.

I looked up recipes and came across this one by The Minimalist Baker and liked the sound of it:

  • 3 cups shredded coconut
  • 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1/2 tablespoons of coconut oil, melted
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate

Basically combine all the ingredients save the chocolate in a food processor. Scoop into macaroon like shapes and place on baking sheet. Bake briefly (they said 8-10 minutes, mine burnt in 5 so keep an eye… )

Allow to cool and then dip in melted chocolate

Yeah so total disaster all in all but sometimes you eat the bar and sometimes the bar eats you, amiright?

May 31st is also my big cousin Kory’s birthday

He should have been turning 39 today
He died the year before Sarah
Testicular cancer.
I was aware he had been diagnosed and was undergoing treatment, but I was completely naive and thought he would be fine and just come out the other side- it was really shocking when I got the news it didn’t go down like that.

At this point in my life, what is more shocking is that I had been lucky to have never experienced losing a family member until then.
He, like Sarah, left three children behind.
Quite frankly, I usually push away thoughts about it as it’s just straight up eery

So I just wanted to take a moment to not just celebrate National Macaroon Day, but also to remember my cousin. Kory was a really happy person and just pursued ‘joy’ unlike anyone else I knew.
Gone but not forgotten. Hope he is at peace. Xo cuz.

Day 150 – May 30th

National Mint Julep Day!

I find myself looking forward to the boozy holidays -they are too few and far between. Although I could have taken the easy route of National Water a Flower Day, I’ve only had a mint julep once before, years ago, so I relished the opportunity to knock back a few.

I had made a date with Kathleen and a friend from work, Steph, to go for some Mint Juleps– the preferred drink of slave owners, at the local New Orleans themed resto and bar, as that seemed the most fitting given that the drinks origin is in Southern USA.

I had nothing to do this day and it was raining (quelle surpris) and I have a weird sprained chest injury, so I decided to rest up for my big cocktail Tuesday night out. I spent the day sprawled on the couch watching Master of None’s season two. In it, Aziz Ansari’s character is in Italy and is also going on a lot of dates. These two plot points meant a lot of wine drinking scenes.

I found myself really yearning for a glass of wine, myself.
Then I came to revelation that I’m a grown ass woman who can drink wine whenever she wants. So cracked open a bottle and finished watching the season.

This also set me up to be tipsy going out for more drinks

Upon arrival at the aforementioned NOLA themed bar, it was pretty empty. The bartender riddled off the specials but I told him why we were there – National Mint Julep Day so Mint Juleps all ’round.

Of course, the barkeep somehow felt threatened by being informed of something he didn’t know already, so he voiced his doubts that it was, indeed, Mint Julep Day, and went so far as to call upon the DJ (?) guy on his laptop for back up. The DJ (?) guy said he had no idea, as he wouldn’t, and proceeded to do a simple google search, which proved my correctitude.

You know what they always say; nothing more fragile than the male ego!

Anyway he busted out three 6/10 ( on the delicious scale)  Mint Juleps for us and then never checked on us again. So we didn’t get a second round there and headed to mine and Steph’s place of work for one more drink

There our bartender made way better and stronger Mint Juleps, for half the price and no questions asked. Thanks Kenton.

These made me really drunk and ready to end Mint Julep Day 2017. Cheers! Tomorrow is National Macaroon Day!

Day 149 – May 29th

May 29th is Put a Pillow on Your Fridge Day

I have put pillows ‘in’ the fridge before, for intensive chilling purposes, but never ‘on’.
I am used to more or less mindlessly following along with the day du jour unquestioningly, but this day begged to be looked into.

There was not that much info on the matter- just that in the early 1900’s people used to do put a piece of clothing on their fridge (or whatever they used back then) for good luck & prosperity
Somewhere through the jigs and the reels it morphed into a pillow, specifically, rather than clothing.
I also noted that some Instagrammers who also partake in National holidays, put the pillow inside the fridge.

I was pretty non committal and put Chrissy’s throw cushion up there because it matches the magnets
