August 7 – Day 219

Lucky for me, National Lighthouse Day fell on a day I was in Newfoundland, where there are so many you could practically trip over them… well not really, if people were tripping over them, they aren’t very good at their job, are they?

Steph and I hit the ol’ Blackhead Road to head to Cape Spear, the most Easterly point of North America. How glamorous.

It was windy and the fog was to the ground, yet we still managed to see some whale flipping and flopping around out in the bay

Then I implored Steph to take some of those classic leaning-tower-of-Pisa-tourist shots

They were off to a rough start

But with enough coaching and guidance, we were able to pull off these doozies

Just so believable, eh?

Happy National Lighthouse Day, y’all

August 6 – Day 218

International Sailor Moon Day!!

I relished the opportunity to bust out my Sailor Jupiter tank top and read some manga !

Sailor Moon and the Sailor Scouts were some of the first positive female cartoon role models my sisters and I were exposed to as kids growing up in the late ’90s. Sailor Uranus and Neptune being a LGBTQ couple was groundbreaking! These girls didn’t take any crap and they were always being vocal about sexism.

This show shaped me and my sisters, 100%.  We went as them for Halloween, I was Jupiter, Sarah was Mercury and Claire was Chibi Moon. Our neighbours were Saturn and Venus.  We used to tape it and rewatch every episode. We had the posters and the soundtrack CD.

So grateful for the chance to celebrate the Scouts and reflect on their contribution to society! In the name of the Moon, I (salute) you!!!!

August 5 – Day 217

While waiting in the airport on one of my way too many layovers en route from Terrace BC to St. John’s NL, I picked up a cute pair of underwear at the airport with little Duncan dogs all over them for James! Perfect for National Underwear Day !

I think Duncan was creeped out.

August 4 – Day 216

International Beer Day ! Hooray! Any holiday to do with beer is welcome in my blog!

To celebrate, I decided to try a new and really intriguing beer I saw at the NLC by SpinDrift Brewing company – Blueberry Chai Pilsner

Now we alllllll know it could only be a true pilsner if it was made in Pilsen, Czech Republic, known for it’s soft water, so this guy from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia was never going to be authentic.

The Blueberry Chai part was what captivated me.
When I poured it, it looked the part. When I tasted it, however, it tasted like a plain old lager. Nothing blueberry or chai about it.

It was fine. And Chai is a flavour probably best left for a heavier beer like a stout or port, mayhaps?

August 3 – Day 215

Doubled down on the celebrating today – National Watermelon Day AND National IPA Day

IPA, India Pale Ale, is super trendy right now because people love to be miserable.
For real, the whole reason this beer type exists is because the English, while occupying India, needed beer, and couldn’t brew beer there because it was too hot., so they would brew it home and ship it there.
To withstand the months and months at sea they added waaay more hops, a natural preservative,  than would normally be palatable and thus and such we have IPA.

I don’t know if we as a society were nostalgic for the good old days of aggressive imperialism or what, but this beer has resurfaced with a vengeance. Apparently it is THE most popular craft beer style.

If you couldn’t tell by the tone of the intro, I am not too keen on this type of beer because USUALLY it tastes like acid reflux. However I have had some I like such as Propellor Brewery in Halifax’s IPA – notes of grapefruit, refreshing and delightful.

James and I decided to try a few different ones for the holiday.

Brewdog Punk IPA was the best of the lot. It was actually really great – just flavourful enough to be more than a lager or regular pale ale, but not too over board with the pungentness.  I would have that again any time. The rest I could take or leave.

It was a sunny day, so we sliced up some watermelon for National Watermelon Day, to cleanse our palettes between IPA’s.

It was a beauty. The past few watermelons I have picked up were really not ripe or bland or not in season, who knows, all I know is I couldn’t eat them so I was pleasantly surprised to have a good one that hit the spot!

Hadn’t celebrated two concepts in one day in a while so I felt like I was working hard!

August 2 – Day 214

National Ice Cream Mother Fucking Sandwich Day, bitches!

Bought these cute little mini 100% vegan guys at the nearby Sobey’s

The ones with the ‘white’ filling are So Delicious Dairy Free Coconut Ice Cream Sandwiches and the chocolate filled ones are Tofutti Dairy free Chocolate Ice Cream sandwiches.

I couldn’t decide between the two so I bought both!
These guys brought me right back to grade school recess of days yore

To celebrate this day, James and I pretty much mowed down this entire platter!

August 1 – Day 213

213th day of celebrating every day literally really got me good

National Girlfriends Day !

I have THE BEST girlfriends

THE BEST, Jerry!

I like to think I celebrate and appreciate them everyday but for the sake of this initiative, I’ll reel it in to one day of celebrations.

I got to hang with three great girlfriends whom I’ve known and loved a long time!

Hadn’t seen miss Lori Beck in eons!
Hadn’t seen Jill since she became a mother !
Hillary brought some watermelon mimosa mix and so we lit it up…as much as people do in the middle of the day when they have evening plans and babies etc etc

Not featured in photo is all my other girlfriends who I love and admire – Steph! Christina! Kathleen! Molly! Carleigh! Allyson! Other Steph! Crystal! Titia! Lori! Brooke! …to name a few… the Vancouver gaggle !  Ah this is getting weird  – just know if you are my friend, and female, I probably like you the most !

July 31 – Day 212

Holy guacamole it’s National Avocado Day

Avocado is my favourite food, hands down

I know it’s a fruit but I don’t think of it that way – what kinda fruit tastes good with garlic?? Besides tomatoes, I mean

To be even more specific, it’s actually a berry – how weird is that?

I was blessed to have several ripe and ready to go avocados for my photographing and eating pleasure

These guys went well with my baked beans and tofu scramble breakfast…. and just a drizzle of Sriracha

Like how gorgeous is that?

I motion to make National Avocado Day a civic holiday or whatever it takes to be an official day off work and school!

July 30 – Day 211

National Paperback Book Day!!

I was beyond delighted to be home in Newfoundland and to have my ever willing model, Herman, back

He did such a great job raising awareness about literacy for dogs demonstrating his love of reading in this shoot.

He thought The Greatest Hits of Wanda Jaynes by Bridget Canning (his first cousin once removed, fyi) was a real page turner

All the characters were relatable, the story was unique and there were lots of laughs along the way ! He can’t wait for the sequel !

July 29 – Day 210

National Lipstick Day!!

I don’t think I owned a single lipstick up until maybe 2012 ?

But now I own a bunch and get a kick out of wearing really obnoxious shades.
I like the foolish, bright colours like Barbie pink, purples, blues and greens, but also black, because why not

This is by far my favourite colour – NYX Liquid Suede in Sway

But I tried out a pink one for the day

NYX is the best because they have the biggest selection and are really cheap so I would have to say they are my fave. However I do have a sample of Tarte liquid lip colour and it’s formula is way better
