Saturday night – had to work- as usual
I was able to weasel my way out of closing, though, which always brings me great joy.
I feel like I really accomplished something if I can manoeuvre someone else into staying till close while I hop in the jeep and peel out of wherever I’ve illegally parked for the past three hours
It’s the simple things, I suppose
And because I was off early, I was able to pop by my friend Steph’s house and have some chips and dip for National Guacamole Day !
I got the good shit from Whole Foods. I like it because it is very avocadoey… like you can see smushy chunks in there
It paired nicely with the $4 wine Steph got at Trader Joe’s in the states
I also boosted the cover photo from National Corn Chip day, back in January, when this blog seemed like a great idea!!
International Dot Day …
apparently it’s “a global celebration of creativity, courage and collaboration, began when teacher Terry Shay introduced his classroom to Peter H. Reynolds’ book The Dot on September 15, 2009…. The Dot is the story of a caring teacher who dares a doubting student to trust in her own abilities by being brave enough to “make her mark”. What begins with a small dot on a piece of paper becomes a breakthrough in confidence and courage, igniting a journey of self-discovery and sharing, which has gone on to inspire countless children and adults around the globe”
Good for them…
I decided to interpret the ‘dot’ in International Dot Day as ‘polka dot’ and made Duncan wear a bowtie, my bad
He looked so sharp tho
…and really worked it
National Cream Filled Donut Day!!!
As you can imagine, I was counting down the days to this particular national holiday.
Not that I was reserving eating a cream filled donut for this day, as I will eat a cream filled donut any damn day I please.
Cartem’s September vegan friendly special is a Purple Yam (Ube Halaya)
Ube Halaya stuffed yeast donut with milk glaze and dolce de leche drizzle
I’m guessing they use some sort of milk alternative but neglected to put it in their description
I made sure to get there at juuuuussst the right time (can’t go too early, as they may not have been delivered, can’t go too late as they will sell out… 11:15 is a good try) to pick one up for National Cream Filled Donut Day
Well I gotta be honest, it was not my jam.
Potato stuffed donut is just too far down the slippery slope of starches for me, people.
I toughed it out but am looking forward to what their October offerings bring
National Peanut Day !!
No, not that Peanuts, this Peanut :
I found some real live unshelled peanuts which I haven’t seen since at least 2006 … or thereabouts I’m sure
I got them at the dollar store.
Although I spend most of my money there, I can’t bring myself to eat anything from there. Maybe in a zombie apocalypse and I’ve been in hiding/on the road, hungry and lost and came across a dollar store, unlooted… maybe then I’d eat some of their packaged goods…
..but otherwise, I think I’ll stick to my guns
Thank you Peanut, for your amazing flavour, incredible caloric value and for bringing us peanut butter
I tip my hat
Haven’t had Ants On A Log is at least 100 years
Peanut butter on Celery + raisins
This National Ants On A Log Day I ate about four logs and recalled my Aunt Kate, when I was a child, encouraging me to try peanut butter on celery, and that if I did, I would never go back to Cheeze Whiz on celery.
It’s one of those strange, crisp and concise memories you have no absolutely no reason.
I did, in fact, go right back to Cheeze Whiz as my preferred celery condiment, but as an adult, I’d be hard pressed to put Cheeze Whiz on something if my life depended on it.
I’m an avid bed maker
Here is an exact list of reasons I wholeheartedly agree with
The best reason being the first one : it’s your first accomplishment of the day
When you are in the pits of despair, as I have been, nothing drags you down deeper than trying to escape reality by going to bed and having to crawl into disorganized mess.
Duncan usually bounds out of the bed, ready to “ceuille le jour” (he’s French, so…)
But on National Make Your Bed Day, it was like pulling teeth to get him out of there
In the end, he did get up and at ’em, and I made the bed, but it was a weird day for him to decide he was going to stand (or lay) his ground and laze in bed !
Dory wasn’t my dog. But she was the dog that sparked my love of dogs.
If it wasn’t for Dory, there would be no Herman or Duncan or me losing my mind, stopping to pet every dog I see or following thousands of dog based Instagram accounts.
So for National Pet Memorial Day I wanted to honour Dory, the sweetest, wisest little Valley Bulldog you’d ever met.
She developed inoperable cancer at age 11. She lasted four months after her diagnosis and had to be put down January 2014
She was great company and a good role model to all the other dogs
She will never be replaced
Moving to Vancouver meant leaving a lot of things behind… my husband, my Herman, and my teddy bear that my cousin Kory gave me when I was three.
Because my teddy bear wasn’t here to celebrate on National Teddy Bear Day, I decided to celebrate this guy that I made in a self care workshop last year
Pretty nifty, if I do say so myself
As an adult, I respect the shit out of Star Trek
George Takei is a genius … Nichelle Nichols is a hero and was personally taken aside by Dr. Martin Luther King and encouraged to keep up her work with the show (despite her desire to quit) because representation matters … women had roles of expertise and respect… it dropped America’s first televised interracial kiss… Patrick Stewart/nuff said …
As a kid, however, I was scared to death of it
I hate aliens, I hate outer space, I hate space travel, I hate Spock’s ears.. everything about it creeped me out
There was one episode where they were getting sucked into some giant terrifying space worm and I think I had my first panic attack (circa grade 1)
I remember them like slowly but surely heading into the hell mouth and feeling like I was dying with them. It was horrifying. I can’t believe MLK let his kids watch this
The other episode that comes to mind is the one where these creepy jelly fish type creatures had infested the ship
I remember watching this with Sarah and her telling me that these creatures really do exist in the world, just not in Newfoundland
In attempt to face my childhood fears, I started to watch an episode to celebrate National Star Trek Day, but even the opening credits triggered memories of childhood nightmares and fear of being lost in outer space.
So rather than traumatize myself, I chose to reflect on the powerful and meaningful influence the show had on society and salute it’s cast and creators
On the drive to Kelowna, my road trip buddy Joe and I stopped in at Old Yale Brewery in Chilliwack to have a few beer samples
I was so surprised and blown away by their Moon Dance Mango Wheat Ale that I had to buy a 6 pack
It’s refreshing, it’s light, it’s crisp, it’s a smidge fruity and entirely delightful
I had ensured to save one from the trip for National Beer Lovers Day and so when the day arrived, I savoured it with all my heart and soul… and then later that day saw an Old Yale Brewing company van driving down 4th Avenue! So it’s probably available somewhere nearby! I just have to get around to finding it! Yippee Skippee!
