National Button Day fell on the same day that I had the amazing privilege of going to see Viola Davis speak at the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver.
Kathleen had gifted me this button she found on a bulletin board jammed with buttons that was left on the side of the road. I wish I had a picture of it – it was a mind blowing amount. The person was clearly a devoted collector and just decided to throw it all away.
Anyway this button fit perfectly with the lecture, as Dr. Davis is a prison abolitionist.
“Why are people so quick to assume that locking away an increasingly large proportion of the U.S. population would help those who live in the free world feel safer and more secure?” she asks
The answer “…it relieves us of the responsibility of seriously engaging with the problems of our society, especially those produced by racism,” Davis says.
It was so unbelievable to be able to see her in person. A night I won’t be forgetting anytime soon.
