Day 197 – July 16

National Fresh Spinach Day… not National regular Spinach Day … that’s March 16th, obviously.

I bought a bunch. Looked quite like a bouquet

Full of beta carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin, as well as iron and zinc, the leafy green is a delight to have in a salad or smoothie

which I planned on having one or the other, but then didn’t follow through on after the photo shoot

it was just too pretty to eat and an 8 piece yam & avocado roll next door is $4.95 so… yknow…

Day 195 – July 14

So gotta come clean: I actually sneakily celebrated National Mac and Cheese Day, yesterday when I had that god awful poutine

HOWEVER, I didn’t eat it all at that time and had taken a ‘doggy bag’, as they were once called.

This National Macaroni and Cheese Day had a tight schedule of enjoyable things I had to do

I had to go on a hike with Ashley, Ian, Duncan and Toast in Quarry Rock, then I had to go to Vancouver Folk Festival and see my all time favourite musician, Billy Bragg play TWICE.

Duncan and I finally got to  nail our Lion King pose

Also I had a beer.

Busy busy busy

After the hike, I had just enough time to shower, pack a bag with snacks, blankets, sunscreen and a thermos of rosé wine, and wolf down the remaining Macaroni and cheese from the day before

Mac and cheese is my favourite, so I was on the hunt for the best vegan Mac and cheese Vancouver had to offer. I’ve had a few here in the city, but this one from Wallflower Diner was touted the best according the plebeians who put in the time making Yelp reviews

It was ok.
They used that Daiya orange fake cheese which is pretty nasty, but if I avoided the top, it wasn’t half bad.

Then it was get the f to the festival for Billy Bragg’s Working Class Hero set with Rhiannon Giddens et al.

I was thiiiiis close. It was bananas

Day 194 – July 13

Um yeah, so National French Fry Day was kind of a big deal.
It seemed like everyone was celebrating it – even those who don’t usually pursue celebrating every single official holiday day
Instagram was teeming with McDonald’s eating selfies

I chose to go  the more non traditional French Fry route today and ordered a vegan poutine from Wallflower Diner

Well, sometimes the road less travelled is less travelled for a reason.

The gravy tasted like a chicken soup bouillon cube.
I have no idea what the cheese was supposedly made of, and it didn’t matter because it was null and void of taste.
And the fries. Oh the fries. They were straight from a McCains freezer bag

Yeah… so … happy National French Fry Day, everyone else but me 🙁

Day 193- July 12

Pecans may just be the most glamorous nut.

I mean, hazelnuts may sound a lot more ritzy, but those portly little guys are as ugly as peanuts (and those guys are actually beans – ew)

Pecans are beautiful – their sleek wood like shell is gorgeous and the inner nut meat couldn’t be more chic if it was designed by Frank Gehry

If pecans were a person they would be Lisa Bonet

I had a  little mini pecan pie on this National Pecan Pie Day

It was store bought and not vegan and not fresh and not good

But that seems to be the thing about this celebrating project – a lot of things are just awful. Just trying to dance in the rain over here

Day 192- July 11

Fast and dirty National Blueberry Muffin Day !

I took this holiday as an opportunity to celebrate one of the little everyday things. Blueberry muffins are pretty much in any cafe or bakery you pass.
I rarely pick them up but I like them. Being able to grab a muffin quickly has saved me from many hanger attacks in the past

I picked up a mixed berry kamut vegan muffin and brought it home. My friends had dropped off some fresh blueberries earlier this week and they really enhanced the photo shoot

I thought the muffin photographed beautifully but Kamut is a hard grain to get behind when you’re trying to muffin- it was pretty dry and cough-inciting, not gonna lie.

Day 191 – July 10

National Pina Colada Day!
Although you won’t catch me responding to any personal ads with liking Pina Coladas as a must, I do like them just fine… when made with the right stuff!

Christina robbed my joy (the Vitamin blender), but I have a mini Hamilton beach blender kicking around and decided I would bust it out for this notorious cocktail du jour.

I combined:

  • 1/2 cup fresh pineapple
  • 1/2 cup of Coconut milk ice cream
  • 1 oz of rum
  • almond milk as needed to blend

I garnished with some strawberries, pineapple and some grated coconut.

Delicioso.
Perfect little afternoon treat to sip when you have to  gut your storage locker of all your possessions when there is a mold problem in your building and your landlord doesn’t give a fuck and isn’t going to do anything about whatsoever ! Pairs perfectly!

Day 189 – July 8

July 8 is National Chocolate Almond Day

No, you’re not having deja vu, you’re probably just confusing this holiday with  with regular Chocolate Covered Nut Day, or, perhaps,   Chocolate Covered Raisin Day.

Common mistake.

I scored some vegan dark chocolate covered almonds at the Safeway/Sobeys and fashioned my own little trail mix out of them

I combined:

  • almonds
  • cashews
  • walnuts
  • hazelnuts
  • Brazil nuts
  • peanuts
  • coconut flakes
  • chocolate covered almonds

Put it all in a baggy and hit the old Highway 99 for another trip in The Pickle with Duncan

He made a useless copilot

We went to Joffre Lakes

This hike was pretty short and dusty and full of people – I saw so many young little families and thought of Sarah missing hers… or hers missing her rather, every step of the way. The view was stunning.

Had a beer with my DIY trail mix and then headed back down the mountain.

Once back on the road, we pulled over for a lovely little swim at One Mile Lake, drove a little further, then had another swim at Lost Lake with some wine and spent the night in Whistler

Not a bad Chocolate Covered Almond Day at all! Thank you almonds for your vitamin E and healthy fats and protein, and chocolate for your deliciousness!

Day 185 – July 4

National Independence from Meat Day?

Nah, man, for me, it’s  Independence from Meat LIFE

That shit is disgusting.

For supper, I whipped up a burrito bowl of sorts:

  • 1 cup quinoa
  • 1 can black beans
  • 1 roasted sweet potato
  • 1 red onion
  • mixed pepper, diced
  • 1/2 zucchini, diced
  • 3 button mushrooms, diced
  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • 5 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 jar of Salsa

Prepped the quinoa, roasted the sweet potatoes and then sautéed the remaining. Topped it with some diced avocado and

Bang- a -rang!

Meat free independence accomplished

Day 184 – July 3

National Eat Your Beans Day!

( Not to be confused with National Bean Day,  of January 6th fame )

T’was a Monday and I was notified pretty much last minute that my practicum was cancelled that day.
My classmate Marija had asked to get together for a dog walk about a week ago, after this now cancelled practicum, and so I tried to move it to earlier in the day.

Turns out I’m the only morning person out of the two of us.

I had suggested we walk around Buntzen Lake  and then check out Brewery Row in Port Moody- a series of four microbreweries all on the same row. Twin Sails, Parkside Brewery, Moody Ales, and Yellow Dog Brewery.

It was a long weekend so everyone and their dog had the great idea of going to Lake Buntzen. It was so hectic there that they just shut down the road that leads to it because it was too overcrowded.

So we made due with going to Belcarra Provincial Park.  It was hot as hell and midday at this point, causing little Duncan to collapse theatrically in panting fits every few metres, so we cut the hike short and went to check out the beer!

All the breweries were great – Brewer’s Row was pretty much heaven. Also mostly dog friendly. Parkside Brewery had the best deck – dog treats and water and astroturf, killing it. Moody Ales had the most adventurous brewskis going- Pineapple Hefeweizen? Lemon Matcha?

Bananas.

But Twin Sails had the best beer. Period.
( *please envision that said like Sean Spicer)

AAAND best food truck – The Truckeria.

There I scored some Black Bean tacos so I could get my Eat Your Beans Day on! Plus the owners humoured my clunky, rusty, forgotten Spanish!! They were from Mexico and sweet as pie.

These tacos were so delish and paired perfectly with my little smaller of Twin Sails beer. Eat You Beans Day was celebrated  to the max ! Annie and Duncan wanted in on the action too!

Day 182 – HALF WAY DAY

July 1st is the half way point of the entire year – 182 spins around the sun of the allotted 365 spins we call a ‘year’.

It’s an official day too – called National Half Way Day

It was also Canada Day – Canada’s 150th to be exact.

Well not really, when you factor in that First Nations have lived here well beyond that and also Newfoundland didn’t join until 1949 so like,  not exact whatsoever.

Thirdly it was National Creative Ice Cream Flavour Day!

So I had a lot on the proverbial plate here.

It was a gorgeous day in Vancouver, as it has been for quite some time now- it’s the new default setting – sunshine and warmth. I was most excited about celebrating the half way point of this project!

Kathleen and I went to see a play near the UBC botanical gardens, “Th’owxiya: The Hungry Feast Dish” performed by Axis Theatre

The screen play author and cast were all First Nations, and because it was on “Canada Day”, we thought it was going to be a really politically charged theatre production going down and couldn’t wait.

It turned out to be more so a children’s story.  Quite off the mark there.

Still nice.

Then we went to Arbor and had lunch – deep fried artichoke sandwich with eggplant bacon and macadamia nut ‘cheese’. Divine.

THEN we went to a brand new ice cream place that serves vegan ice cream.

Their vegan selection were Strawberry Coconut, Toasted Marshmallow (which I’ve had before and LOOOOOVED), Lime Coconut and Coffee.

Besides Toasted Marshmallow, I felt coffee was the most creative flavour so I went for it.

Holy McMoly, it was incredible. I can’t get enough of this stuff.

Kathleen went for an Affogato – coffee ice cream with espresso. It too was amazing .

Then I had to go to work and it was dead for the entire time until midnight when I got completely rocked by myself and a patron had to jump on bar and help.

Happy Canada Day etc !
