October 7 – Day 281

It was cold.
It was rainy.
It was not National Frappe Day in my heart.
But it was National Frappe Day on nationaldaycalendar.com, and I’m it’s bitch so here we go…

I went in to the neighbourhood Starbucks (yuck, I know) and had a gander at their Frappe menu

Overwhelmed by the seemingly endless combinations of  coffee, chocolate, peppermint and caramel, I settled on a good old fashioned

Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino® Blended Beverage

I say to whatshisname behind the counter that I would like a Pumpkin Spice Frappe made with coconut milk please and he responds, with an all too smug smirk, that they don’t do ‘frappes’ here, that’s McDonald’s (he is haute couture and I am so white trash). I was like aren’t you all soulless multinational corporations that underpay and over work your employees and wreak havoc on the environment and local businesses?

Anyway I ended up with a Frappuccino® Blended Beverage in the end

It was pretty gross, which I was prepared for

I tried to pawn it off on Duncan but even he was leery of the strange scent and flavour

Would have preferred not shelling out $7 on icy sugary guck, but somebody’s gotta celebrate everyday literally

September 29 – Day 273

Coffee and I have a strange abusive relationship where I really believe it’s not gonna fuck me right up ‘this time’, so I go back to it… then,  a few sips in, my heart is racing, I’m sweating,  and I can’t keep up with my thoughts. When the mania subsides, I vow we are never ever ever getting back together

But then in a moment of weakness, I yearn for it’s smokey, bitter, soothing warmth  and order up an Americano and the cycle starts again

On National Coffee Day, Daniel was in town and went to Parallel 49 to get us ladies some coffee for the ride to the airport.

I guess they asked what names to put on the orders and they clearly couldn’t understand Daniel’s indecipherable Goulds accent  when he said “Jennah with an H”

September 28 – Day 272

This National Drink a Beer Day  will break the tie between beer and burgers for most national holidays created for them.

The highlight reel of beer related holidays already celebrated by yours truly this year include; National Beer Lover’s Day International Beer Day National IPA Day Beer Day , and  National Beer Can Day

I went for dinner at Vij’s with Christina and Maggie.  The rooftop patio with fairy lights and communal seating was delightful. Vij himself came over to see how we were enjoying things. I, as usual, got too star struck to say anything clever or ask for a picture.

While Christina and Maggie indulged in some elaborate cocktails, I chose a pilsner off the beer menu to ‘drink a beer’ for National Drink a Beer Day. We shared a bunch of entrees and then Christina snuck off and paid for the entire bill as a treat. How nice.

September 27 – Day 271

National Chocolate Milk Day

Yee haw. Got some Natur-a Chocolate Soy milk in the ‘juice box’ format to conjure up some childhood memories

I don’t think soy milk was around in my childhood so no memories were conjured

September 20 – Day 264

Volunteering at a facility for people for disabilities has been one of my favourite experiences here in Vancouver

Working with ‘the gang’ has been the highlight of my week, week after week.

I never looked at my time spent there as a chore and am certainly not looking forward to my time there coming to an end

National Punch Day fell on this particular’s facilities Volunteer Appreciation Day – so I was invited in early for some veggie dogs and snacks, as well as a special thank you present but, la piece de resistance was  PUNCH!

Perf!

Thanks guys -you really helped a sister out here !  Punch isn’t really my jam and having it all set up in a pot, ready to serve, made this holiday a cinch to celebrate

It seemed to be consisted of 7 UP, McCains concentrated fruit juice and slices of oranges.

Purely one of those fell-onto-one’s-lap moments…
…I looked into the origin of “fell into one’s lap” origin story and there apparently isn’t one – it simply makes sense in and of itself

go figs. Way more macho than ‘waiting for the other shoe to drop’ *eye roll*

August 16 – Day 228

National Rum Day !!

I do love me a mojito from time to time, but rum is most definitely not my go to spirit

I branched out, however, and honoured this sweet liquor by making a Dark & Stormy cocktail!

You will need:

  • 2 ounces dark rum
  • 3 ounces ginger beer
  • ½ ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
  • Lime wheel or wedge, for garnish

Build the cocktail on ice, leaving rum for last and ‘float’ it on the top

That’s what I do at work all the time – I made a few of these and the patrons were loving them

August 15th – Day 227

Day 227 being National Relaxation Day was a small miracle

Being ordained by this foolish blog to relax ! Take it easy!  Do nothing? Hallelujah !

It was sunny so I grabbed a few beer from the fridge, hopped on my bike and rolled on down to Jericho beach for a change of scenery. Had a few dips, both in the ocean and in the roasted red pepper hummus, and let the sun and sand do the rest

August 14 – Day 226

National Creamsicle Day

I was never an overt fan of the creamsicle.. gimme a polar bar or a chipper any day

My distaste for this orange and vanilla flavoured ice cream could probably be whittled down to the fact that I don’t really like fruit or fruit flavoured things.

To celebrate this day, I bought some vanilla coconut ice cream and an orange and had fantastical ideas about making a vegan creamiscle milkshake smoothie concoction. However the day escaped me and I  just didn’t find the time to put my ingredients to work

Luckily for me, that evening as I was out for a night of trivia, I spotted a creamiscle cocktail on the bar menu

Orange Juice + Whipped Cream flavoured vodka + soda

I realized immediately after the first sip that although it tastes exactly like a creamsicle, that’s not really a good thing

I choked down about half of the cocktail and switched to good ol’ PBR then came 3rd at trivia
Booyah

August 3 – Day 215

Doubled down on the celebrating today – National Watermelon Day AND National IPA Day

IPA, India Pale Ale, is super trendy right now because people love to be miserable.
For real, the whole reason this beer type exists is because the English, while occupying India, needed beer, and couldn’t brew beer there because it was too hot., so they would brew it home and ship it there.
To withstand the months and months at sea they added waaay more hops, a natural preservative,  than would normally be palatable and thus and such we have IPA.

I don’t know if we as a society were nostalgic for the good old days of aggressive imperialism or what, but this beer has resurfaced with a vengeance. Apparently it is THE most popular craft beer style.

If you couldn’t tell by the tone of the intro, I am not too keen on this type of beer because USUALLY it tastes like acid reflux. However I have had some I like such as Propellor Brewery in Halifax’s IPA – notes of grapefruit, refreshing and delightful.

James and I decided to try a few different ones for the holiday.

Brewdog Punk IPA was the best of the lot. It was actually really great – just flavourful enough to be more than a lager or regular pale ale, but not too over board with the pungentness.  I would have that again any time. The rest I could take or leave.

It was a sunny day, so we sliced up some watermelon for National Watermelon Day, to cleanse our palettes between IPA’s.

It was a beauty. The past few watermelons I have picked up were really not ripe or bland or not in season, who knows, all I know is I couldn’t eat them so I was pleasantly surprised to have a good one that hit the spot!

Hadn’t celebrated two concepts in one day in a while so I felt like I was working hard!

August 1 – Day 213

213th day of celebrating every day literally really got me good

National Girlfriends Day !

I have THE BEST girlfriends

THE BEST, Jerry!

I like to think I celebrate and appreciate them everyday but for the sake of this initiative, I’ll reel it in to one day of celebrations.

I got to hang with three great girlfriends whom I’ve known and loved a long time!

Hadn’t seen miss Lori Beck in eons!
Hadn’t seen Jill since she became a mother !
Hillary brought some watermelon mimosa mix and so we lit it up…as much as people do in the middle of the day when they have evening plans and babies etc etc

Not featured in photo is all my other girlfriends who I love and admire – Steph! Christina! Kathleen! Molly! Carleigh! Allyson! Other Steph! Crystal! Titia! Lori! Brooke! …to name a few… the Vancouver gaggle !  Ah this is getting weird  – just know if you are my friend, and female, I probably like you the most !
