October 7 – Day 281

It was cold.
It was rainy.
It was not National Frappe Day in my heart.
But it was National Frappe Day on nationaldaycalendar.com, and I’m it’s bitch so here we go…

I went in to the neighbourhood Starbucks (yuck, I know) and had a gander at their Frappe menu

Overwhelmed by the seemingly endless combinations of  coffee, chocolate, peppermint and caramel, I settled on a good old fashioned

Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino® Blended Beverage

I say to whatshisname behind the counter that I would like a Pumpkin Spice Frappe made with coconut milk please and he responds, with an all too smug smirk, that they don’t do ‘frappes’ here, that’s McDonald’s (he is haute couture and I am so white trash). I was like aren’t you all soulless multinational corporations that underpay and over work your employees and wreak havoc on the environment and local businesses?

Anyway I ended up with a Frappuccino® Blended Beverage in the end

It was pretty gross, which I was prepared for

I tried to pawn it off on Duncan but even he was leery of the strange scent and flavour

Would have preferred not shelling out $7 on icy sugary guck, but somebody’s gotta celebrate everyday literally

October 6 – Day 280

Jesus Christ the #2 bus will be the end of me

I had to take it to get the elementary school I have my practicum at and, like, it’s just bananas

First of all there are two types of #2 bus.
One that goes where I need and one that doesn’t.
So you have to ask every #2 that pulls up if it’s going to 41st Avenue.
9 out of 10 bus drivers will respond ‘No’.

And so you wait and wait and wait despite Google maps and the sign and all the other signifiers say it’s coming in two minutes.
They mean the other #2.

Then you may get on the right #2, after all the missed attempts, and even with confirmation that it is going all the way to 41st Ave, this #2 may very well just stop on King Edward Ave for no reason and cease to move ever again.

You may wait on the inert bus, in naive hopes it will start moving again, or you can follow suit of the outraged cleaning ladies, with all their cleaning supplies in tow, and storm off, walk a few blocks, and get the hell on another bus

This ordeal, which should take 20 minutes, but you gave yourself 45, to be safe, may take an hour and fifteen minutes

This was more or less my National Noodle Day, ladies and gentlemen and non binary peoples.

Good thing I had the spicy peanut Noodlebox, made with tofu and extra spicy

This was one of the first things I ate when I moved to Vancouver. Christina, Daniel and I had it for breakfast because we walked by the one on Main Street and Chrissy got all excited.

Oh the warm noodley memories

September 27 – Day 271

National Chocolate Milk Day

Yee haw. Got some Natur-a Chocolate Soy milk in the ‘juice box’ format to conjure up some childhood memories

I don’t think soy milk was around in my childhood so no memories were conjured

September 26 – Day 270

September 26 is National Dumpling Day

Hi-Nippon on my block makes a mean gyoza, which I am going to interpret as a dumpling for the sake of  this post ( sake was in italics as it was Japanese cuisine pun, for you uncultured swine out there)

I went there an had myself an order

To the best of my knowledge and experience, they were perfect

Sometimes foods like this can be so greasy but these guys at Hi-Nippon do a fantastic job

September 21 – Day 265

National Pecan Cookie Day

While not tremendously popular, they still, somehow, warrant a national holiday

Good for you, Pecan Cookie!
I did my best to source a pure pecan cookie- one that was just cookie and pecan, but they are hard to come by… but I did find some Pecan chocolate chip cookies at the super cute bakery that’s near my elementary school practicum

They had both white and milk chocolate chips in them… and were  a bit hard as they were ‘day olds’ as they call ’em the biz (meaning they are a day old). Whatever, I’m grateful for any reason to wail on a bag of cookies, can I get an amen up in here?

September 19 part II – Day 263

So apparently Sarah & Melvin’s birthday is National Butterscotch Pudding Day

Too bad neither of them are around to comment on the ‘coincidence’

Imma go out on a limb and guess that neither of them were crazy about the mucous like substance

I picked up a 4 pack at No Frills (should I even bother capitalizing no frills? def against brand ) having not tried the stuff since circa grade four….

…aaaaaand it more or less exactly as my memory provides

gross…but not TOTALLY gross… only half gross…. like if you were coming up with new forms of torture as the new intern at Guantanamo Bay you probably wouldn’t bother trying to implement it’s use….  but that’s as much flattery as I can muster at the moment

September 18 – Day 261

Oh man:

National Cheeseburger Day

Yeah yeah yeah, quelle surprise, non?

Well, FYI, The Market (mother fuckin’ ) Grill at the Granville Island public market is positively deadly

Mondays are a long haul day for me – class all morning, all afternoon, and capped off by a practicum placement on the other side of the city

So I indulged in a regular strength cheeseburger (veganism out the window for the cause) to power me through this Monday

Perfection as always !

September 16 – Day 259

Saturday night – had to work- as usual

I was able to weasel my way out of closing, though, which always brings me great joy.

I feel like I really accomplished something if I can manoeuvre someone else into staying till close while I hop in the jeep and peel out of wherever I’ve illegally parked for the past three hours

It’s the simple things, I suppose

And because I was off early, I was able to pop by my friend Steph’s house and have some chips and dip for National Guacamole Day !

I got the good shit from Whole Foods. I like it because it is very avocadoey… like you can see smushy chunks in there

It paired nicely with the $4 wine Steph got at Trader Joe’s in the states

I also boosted the cover photo from National Corn Chip day, back in January, when this blog seemed like a great idea!!

September 14 – Day 257

National Cream Filled Donut Day!!!

As you can imagine, I was counting down the days to this particular national holiday.

Not that I was reserving eating a cream filled donut for this day, as I will eat a cream filled donut any damn day I please.

Cartem’s September vegan friendly special is a Purple Yam (Ube Halaya)

Ube Halaya stuffed yeast donut with milk glaze and dolce de leche drizzle

I’m guessing they use some sort of milk alternative but neglected to put it in their description

I made sure to get there at juuuuussst the right time (can’t go too early, as they may not have been delivered, can’t go too late as they will sell out… 11:15 is a good try) to pick one up for National Cream Filled Donut Day

Well I gotta be honest, it was not my jam.

Potato stuffed donut is just too far down the slippery slope of starches for me, people.

I toughed it out but am looking forward to what their October offerings bring

September 13 – Day 256

National Peanut Day !!

No, not that Peanuts, this Peanut :

I found some real live unshelled peanuts which I haven’t seen since at least 2006 … or thereabouts I’m sure

I got them at the dollar store.
Although I spend most of my money there, I can’t bring myself to eat anything from there. Maybe in a zombie apocalypse and I’ve been in hiding/on the road, hungry and lost and came across a dollar store, unlooted… maybe then I’d eat some of their packaged goods…

..but otherwise, I think I’ll stick to my guns

Thank you Peanut, for your amazing flavour, incredible caloric value and for bringing us peanut butter

I tip my hat
