November 7 – Day 312

National Bittersweet Chocolate with Almonds Day

(Please don’t embarrassingly confuse this with National Chocolate Covered Almond Day, whatever you do- that was sooo July 8th)

IMG_6496.JPG

I got this bar at Welk’s, one of my favourite little shops in Vancouver. The brand is Galerie aux Chocolat and it’s from Belgium. This bar had almonds WITH the chocolate. I ate the whole damn thing and got a sugar headache.

November 6 – Day 311

National Nacho Day

Can’t have nachos without the cheese, so busted out the Vitamix blender and made some crazy ass vegan cheese sauce – recipe as featured on Oh She Glows

Simply gorgeous

My nacho cheese came out a lot more like this:

Not even orange.

But delicious nevertheless. I had some of my home made chilli sitting around, begging to be splayed over some tortilla chips

Added my misbegotten cheese sauce and some guacamole and I had myself a fine National Nacho Day!

November 5 – Day 310

National Donut Day

L. O. L

Jokes on you, National Holiday Calendar: EVERYDAY is National Donut Day!

Hell, it was National Donut Day on June 2nd as well

I kid you not

But I don’t care

IMG_5865.JPG

I relish the opportunity to eat a donut and make a blog post about it

Went to good ol’ faithful dog friendly Cartems and sampled their vegan fare. This was their monthly feature “The Main”

November 3 – Day 308

National Sandwich Day got me like whoa

IMG_5502.JPG

I’ve been growing my own sprouts on and off for years.
It’s really easy.
You get some sprouting seeds like alfalfa seeds or mung beans
Then you soak about a tablespoon of them over night in filtered water.
Then you strain and rinse, strain and rinse, strain and rinse.
Do that for like a 5 days.
And you get sprouts.
You’re like a little Farmer Brown in your very own kitchen.
Or living room.
Wherever you wanna store your sprouts.

Now my genius touch on the process is using a French Press. It makes it so easy for straining!

Anyway, back to National Sandwich Day.

I channelled my inner Sandwich Artist and layered some hummus, cucumber and sprouts on some flax seed whole wheat bread

November 1 – Day 306

National Vegan Day!

Shut Up!

Why be vegan?

It’s good for you

It’s good for the environment

It’s good for animals

It’s delicious

Beyonce is!

Some of my favourite Vegan feeding grounds in Vancouver are:

  • Turf  – ultra chic hipster deli (?) You order from the counter, you can get kombucha or walnut milk lattes and everything is vegan unless you ask for bison added to shit which is super weird .. they also sell fancy blankets and yoga mat sprays etc

IMG_2108.JPG

  • The Arbor – the artichoke sandwich (photo stolen from my friend Aimee’s Insta)

FullSizeRender 36.jpg

  • Uma Luma – vegan ice cream
  • Vegan Supply – that’s where I got this

IMG_6460.JPG

  • Heirloom – swanky vegetarian restaurant with swinging cocktails
  • The Only Cafe – outrageously good cashew milk and then little delicious vegan cheesecake PLUS dog friendly !

FullSizeRender 37.jpg

  • Virtuous Pie- how many “Stranger Wings” pizzas did I eat this year???
  • Eternal Abundance

FullSizeRender 35.jpg

  • Say Hello Sweets – vegan ice cream truck – toasted marshmallow is a personal fave
  • Cartems donuts!

Going vegan in Vancouver was easy as (virtuous) pie!

October 29 – Day 303

National Oatmeal Day !!!

Oatmeal is the earliest cereal cultivated by man
Beta-Glucan is a fibre within this stuff that literally lowers cholesterol
That same fibre also lowers blood sugar levels

IMG_5520.JPG

So good for you, but only good tasting once you douse it in brown sugar or maple syrup

October 28 – Day 302

National Chocolate Day

I scrambled about the kitchen trying to find a chocolate thing I haven’t ‘covered’ in my daily celebratory journey.
A Costco sized bag of bittersweet chocolate chips was all my cupboards had to offer.
It triggered a painful memory –  Duncan once ate a whole bag of these by mousing his way into our bottom cupboard.
He dragged the bag into the living room and into his doggy bed, then ate his hearts delight, rolling about them like Scrooge McDuck in a swimming pool of gold coins.

He was in his glee.
We were in absolute horror.
He is 18 pounds.
The cocoa percentage was 80%.
Cocoa is a neurotoxin for dogs.
He got sick. He puked and puked and shook and shook. We were up all night. He quivered and was weak with illness.

IMG_4092.jpg

And look who was ready to go for round 2 when I was photographing this handful ??
Smh.
Special thanks to the random Instagram follower who felt the need to explain chocolate is poisonous to dogs.

So rather than reflect on that horrific night that we nearly lost little Duncan, I encourage everyone to revisit the highlight reel of chocolate themed holidays !

Like National Chocolate Cupcake Day!

…or National Bittersweet Chocolate Day

But don’t forget National Chocolate Truffle Day

October 17 – Day 291

National Pasta Day

Scored me some … hmm… lemme see….

Rigatoni

Yeah, that’s it. Scored some of that at the fancy boutique-y grocery-ette type store on Broadway IMG_5384.JPG

Pretty much just boiled it up, like you would, and doused it in the plainest tomato sauce known to man.

October 14 – Day 288

National Dessert Day

The sweetest day of the year HAHAHAHAHAHHAAHHAHA!

It seemed like such an ‘obscure’ holiday to the fine folk at CNBC, that it prompted some further investigation on all these ‘strange’ national holidays

I’m over here like bitch don’t get me started

Anyway, I had a donut, as usual

It was ‘meh’ because it wasn’t chocolate
