Day 118 – April 28

April 28 is National Superhero Day!

I was in London Drugs getting some horrifying Aileen Wuornos lookalike passport photos taken..

..when I saw this little critter:

I was all “Treat Yo’self- tis Superhero Day” … I probably even called myself a “Be-yotch” in the spirit of it all, and was about to pay the $9.99, when it dawned on me I have a hella crazy amount of Wonder Woman merchandise and maybe a square stuffed animal is a little unnecessary for a 32 year old woman at this stage of my life

So I didn’t. $10 well saved.

Here is a compilation of things that are rad about Wonder Woman:

  • she has a black twin sister name Nubia
  • she was created by the same guy who invented the polygraph machine
  • she can lift Thor’s hammer

That’s more or less all I know off the top of my head (besides the obvious stuff)

I also really like Sailor Moon, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Batgirl, and The Powerpuff Girls and even feel a little guilty for leaving them out of this post… especially considering I mentioned Aileen Wuornos…

But not guilty enough to do anything about it.

Day 117 – April 27

National Bring your Son or Daughter to Work Day

I had to go to my practicum today at the elementary school, which is sort of work, but I knew bringing my fur son Duncan wasn’t in the cards. Which worked out for the best – I had a pretty serious situation arise with one of the clients I am working with that I won’t get into due to all kinds of confidentiality reasons.

But my other job, I suppose, is prepping The Pickle for Airbnb guests. Duncan most certainly helped me out with that. He usually does because he can’t stand when I leave him behind, let alone over and over again when I have to come and go with sheets and cleaning supplies

So I looped his leash around The Pickle door and he stood guard while I cleaned the place out.

He’s also really good at giving me company when I do my computer work. He sits right on my lap, making it a real challenge to type. But it’s a challenge I gladly accept

This was definitely a little bit ‘cheaty’, but 117 days in, I don’t know how much of af I give anymore !!

Day 116 – April 26

National Pretzel Day!!

It was also my last day of class for the term. I had a meeting with my supervisor. She seemed to think I am doing exceptionally well. How nice.

After school, I went to get a pretzel. I went with the soft varietal and decided not to worry if they were vegan or not.

Duncan was happy with my choice

REAL happy

I got my last Case Study Paper done, then I went to see the movie Maudie and oh lord was it a tear jerking heart breaker but absolutely a must see !

Day 115 – April 25

What a day

Hauled ass to go to a coffee shop I was certain sold zucchini bread – they didn’t
Then I lost my bank card, as in, it fell out of my pocket between my house and the grocery store.
Tried to pay for parking at my acupuncture appointment, but the meter was broken -took my toonie of course.
Having no bank card, I tried to pay for my acupuncture with the VISA gift card MEC put my boots refund on and of course there was no money on it because they screwed it up completely
Ended up with a giant dark forehead bruise from acupuncture
Did not get the paper due Wednesday done at all… not even a bit of progress

Thank god for wine

And Zucchini Bread

Well Zucchini Muffins… they had to do in a pinch, especially considering the harrowing nature of my day

For National Zucchini Bread Day I bought a couple vegan zucchini muffins and ate them both.

Day 114 – April 24

This was the first day, possibly, yet, that has only been ONE thing to celebrate. No options, no cop outs. Just Pigs in a Blanket or bust.

So weird.

One must oblige.

Turns out Pillsbury Crescent Roll dough is vegan so this was actually a pretty straight forward vegan-able dish.

Bought some St. Yves vegan hot dogs and away I went.

You take some crescent roll dough and some vegan hot dogs, roll one on top of the other and put them in the oven. Serve with ketchup.

Of course they ended up a bit ‘over done’ to say the least.
Our oven is hotter than hell, and I never seem to learn.

I don’t remember liking these very much as a child.
Most definitely repulsed by them as an adult.

They certainly don’t photograph well.

They weren’t so bad really. More so bland than gross, which was a pleasant surprise..

Day 113 – April 23

As a Pet Parent, I know the struggle is real.

The house training, the late nights, the long walks, the puking, the barking, the fur on everything you own…the vet appointments, the nail clippings, the snoring, the farting…the drooling, the chewing, the whining

But oh the cuteness

The cuteness outweighs not being able to just get up and go on an unexpected vacation (those never happen anyway)

The cuteness is worth putting your hand in a plastic sack and scooping warm feces off the ground (it starts to feel good after a while)

There is nothing equivalent to the joy that my dogs bring to me and no amount of drool or mud will deter my love

So National Pet Parent Day is a celebration of moi… and James.

I celebrated by leaving Duncan at home and going for a champagne fuelled brunch with a few friends.

No better way to celebrate the act of parenting than by not doing it for an afternoon 😉

So here’s to me, and all those pet parents, working hard to make a better life for their fur babies

And to a lesser degree, James

Day 112 – April 22

National Jelly Bean Day

More sugar, red dye & artificial flavouring for me!

I must trudge on I suppose

I went to a little locally owned candy shop on 4th Avenue and bought vanilla bean & strawberry cheesecake flavoured jelly beans

Then I went to work, met up with a coworker for a drink, went to a strip club, blew all my money, and got home at 3 am

Day 111 – April 21

April 21 = Bulldogs Are Beautiful Day

Now if this day wasn’t perfectly designed for me, I don’t know what one is.

My dogs, Herman & Duncan, are the cutest ones in the whole universe

There really isn’t much to say about it… it’s just a simple fact really

I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves

(Herman swimming)

(Herman’s biological sister, Thayla, & Duncan)

(Duncan and his biological cousin, Grant)

Day 110 – April 20

Holy Smokes is Day 110
This shit be cray
I can’t believe I’m still at this racket

Summer is in the air here in Vancouver… sorta.
Macroscopical gusts of it, at least.

April 20 is a doozy

It’s 4:20, National Lima Bean Respect Day, National Look Alike Day, National Pineapple Upside Down Day, National High Five and National Cheddar Fries Day

Not much of a pot smoker.
I respect the shit out of Lima Beans every. damn. day
My closest look alike is Celine Dion
Pineapple Cake is gross.
Herman gives the best high fives but is far away (Duncan is useless at them)

So I’m stuck with Cheddar Fries.

Fine by me.
Now the conundrum is how to make them vegan so I don’t have to eat cow puss.

It was relatively easy

All you need is :

  • 1 large potato
  • salt
  • pepper
  • chilli powder
  • 1 carrot
  • 1 small potato
  • 1/4 cup cashews (pre soaked)
  • 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • pinch of salt

Preheat oven to 375. Slice the large potato into wedges. Soak in water for about ten minutes. Drain and pat dry then toss in olive oil, salt and chilli powder. Place on baking sheet and roast for 25 minutes.

Dice and boil the carrot and potato. Then in a blender or food processor combine the rest of the ingredients, adding water if need be.

When both parties are ready, combine!

It was pretty delicious although hard to get a good photograph because it was more or less hideous.

Day 109 – April 19th

For National Banana Day I thought I would make some Secret Ingredient Vegan Banana Mega Muffins and share with you my secret recipe with the secret ingredient

These muffins are delicious and nutritious
I even packed some up and dropped some off to Kathleen while she was at work to honour the most versatile fruit of all.
Bananas are second to none in the fruit department
…except maybe avocados.

It’s close.

To make these muffins, do source the ensuing ingredients and follow the directions provided:

  • 2 tablespoons of ground flax seed + 2 tablespoons of water
  • 1 banana – mashed
  • 1 zucchini – grated
  • 1 carrot – grated
  • 3/4 cup of applesauce
  • 1/3 cup of coconut oil – liquid
  • 1 tablespoon of vanilla
  • 1 cup of spelt flour
  • 1 teaspoon of baking soda
  • pinch of salt
  • 1/2 cup of pumpkin seeds
  • 1/2 cup of hemp hearts
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup of walnuts
  • 1 tablespoon of cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon of nutmeg
  • 1 secret

Pre heat oven to 350 degrees

Combine the ground flax seed and water in a small bowl and let sit until it becomes a gummy mixture.
Next, combine the remaining wet ingredients in one bowl with the flax mixture and combine all the dry together in another… except the secret. That comes in later.
When they are thoroughly stirred, independently, THEN combine them all in one big bowl.
Now the secret is idgaf, literally. I just throw things I have on hand in a bowl and then put them in the oven. I actually don’t even measure. So whatever, really. Use the secret wisely
You may need to add more applesauce if the mixture appears to be too dry or more spelt flour if the mixture appears too runny.
Distribute into a lined muffin pan and bake for 20 minutes.

Go Bananas!
